Gemini swapped daily prompt counts for compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours, up to a weekly limit

What this means for you
Limits are no longer published as prompts per day, and all use now counts, including the fast model. Heavy use of the Pro model, Deep Research or image and video generation can use up a 5-hour window quickly, and a weekly limit applies on top.

Google's help article 'Changes to Gemini model access and limits': 'Starting on May 17, 2026 there were changes to usage limits and model availability for Gemini Apps for users over 18' (for under-18s on July 24, 2026). 'Gemini will move to compute-based usage limits that will refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit', and media generation, Deep Research, the Pro model and extended thinking use more. Google's May 19 I/O post: 'We’re moving from daily prompt limits to a "compute-used" model.' The Gemini Apps limits page listed daily counts on May 19, 2026, e.g. AI Pro 'Up to 100 prompts / day' with Pro 3.1, 'Up to 300 prompts / day' with Thinking and 'General access' to Fast; by May 20 it listed AI Pro as '4x higher than standard limits'. After complaints, 9to5Google reported on May 28 that Google is 'capping the amount of quota a single prompt can use' and no longer counting failed requests.
