Discord NitroGet, got better and worseUS
Free upload limit raised from 10MB to 20MB, checked before compression
Discord raised the free upload limit from 10MB to 20MB, but now checks size before compression on mobile too
What changed
- Free upload limit
- Was Before: 10MB per file
- After: 20MB per file
- Mobile size check
- Was Before: After compression
- After: Before compression, as on desktop
What this means for you
Users without Nitro can send files twice as large, though not back to the old 25MB. On Android, where files were compressed first, some uploads may now fail sooner.
What you can do
How we know
An archived copy of Discord's File Attachments FAQ from Jul 25, 2026 gives a 10MB limit without Nitro.
By Aug 14, 2026, an archived copy of the same FAQ gives 20MB.
The FAQ says size is now checked before compression, so Android users may hit the limit more often.
Discord's Sep 8, 2026 patch notes confirm the free limit rose from 10MB to 20MB on all platforms.

Full research notes
Discord's File Attachments FAQ says "For non-Nitro subscribers, the maximum file upload is 10MB" in an archived copy from July 25, 2026 and "20MB" from the August 14, 2026 archived copy. The FAQ (archived September 21, 2026) says: "As of August 2026, the free upload limit is 20MB (up from 10MB)", and that "because we now check file size before compression rather than after, the real-world effect varies by platform": desktop and iOS users "should generally find uploads easier than before," while on Android "you may hit the size limit more often than you did previously, even though the stated number is higher." Nitro Basic (50MB) and Nitro (up to 500MB) are unchanged. Discord's Patch Notes of September 8, 2026 confirm: "We upgraded the free upload limit from 10MB to 20MB across all platforms." The FAQ also says Discord is "experimenting with various file upload size limits."
