Full research notes
Duolingo's press release of March 14, 2023 announced Duolingo Max, a 'new, higher subscription tier' that 'is available now for iOS in the US and other select markets'. Max subscribers 'unlock access to all the benefits of Super Duolingo' plus two AI features built on OpenAI's GPT-4: Explain My Answer and Roleplay. Duolingo's blog post of the same day calls Max 'a new subscription tier above Super Duolingo' and says the features first worked only in the Spanish and French courses for English speakers on iOS. The Help Center article 'What is Duolingo Max?' (archived copy of March 19, 2023) lists the US among the launch regions and says Max 'can be purchased as an individual subscription, or as a family plan to share with 5 other users'. Neither official source states a US price, so none is recorded. Max later came to Android and gained Video Call (separate record); Explain My Answer became free for everyone on January 1, 2026 (separate record).
